Sophé at the River | Outdoor Portraits

We walked down to the edge of the river, navigated a beached dock. As she prepared for a cold plunge, a rogue asparagus plant provided a unique backdrop for a portrait. I stopped her when I saw the colours and asked if I could capture a photo or two. I was meant to capture her knitted creations and in that moment had forgotten that element - however, she told me that everything she was wearing that day was made by her! (sweater, overalls, scarf, bathing suit!)

The fall-dark-days vibe had been with us most of the day-

- cool, cloudy, and grey. Sophé had assured us that she was going swimming that weekend - meaning a cold plunge. I had spent a while outside with other participants from Leystone’s Knitters’ Retreat, capturing their beautiful knit shawls and sweaters, and Sophé came out at the very end. I asked if I could take a few photos, and we played a bit up at the retreat house - but the real magic happened down at the water.

A pocket of light glinted through the clouds…

…just as she entered the water. The water was cold. The river-bottom was soft - and smushy. She sank into mud up to her knees and smiled. Paused. Slowed - and while she did, the water around her settled, and the tiny pocket of light offered just enough to add reflection. This is the magic - this is what makes photography so darn incredible - the stuff you can’t predict (but you can imagine).

Thank you, Sophé, for sharing these photos on the blog, and thank you for sharing such a cool photo session down at the river! This is the good stuff and I’m grateful to have met you at the Knitter’s retreat! (more on that later)
